Facebook says 'automated error' shut down fundraising page for Georgia GOP Senate candidates

Facebook is claiming that an "automated error" accidentally shut down a fundraising page for Republican candidates in Georgia's runoff Senate elections just days ahead of the race.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee posted on Twitter on Friday that Facebook "shut down the ad account for the Georgia Battleground Fund, a joint fundraising committee for NRSC, [Senate candidate David Perdue] and [Senate candidate Kelly Loeffler]."

"This is unacceptable with only 4 days to Election Day," the NRSC tweeted.

The company in shutting down the page cited alleged "deceptive or misleading" policy violations. Facebook later said the controversy was caused by an unspecified technical mishap.

“An automated error caused this ad account to be disabled," the company told media. "The account has since been restored."

Georgia's Senate runoff elections, triggered when no candidate in November won a majority of the vote, will be held Tuesday, Jan. 5.
